Up for Sale

KIAD Jul 2023

Update: our plane sold on August 2, 2023.

It will be the end of an era and I will write more about it in the fall, but we have put our current plane up for sale. There are long, complicated reasons, but the short version is that it is too difficult to get to the airport, which means less flying, which makes me feel less safe.

But we aren’t letting it go until September 15th (unless there’s a jaw-dropping offer), and that’s when I will drop it in Fort Worth to have the engines replaced. We’re hoping to do a bunch of flying this summer, and even into September. So far we’ve been out to the Hamptons and down to DC since getting the plane back from its extended service visit where they found the source of the gremlin-like FADEC errors.

You’re thoughtful and smart enough to make whatever decision you feel is right. I support you on this and thank you for sharing your ride alongs. You and the bird have touched my heart and fancy along the way. I feel privileged to have enjoy the skies through your eyes. You are not a sit still kind of person and I’m sure the future holds more exciting adventures ala the Colin way. 👍🏽❤️✈️

My gut instinct is sadness over this news. But maybe that’s just selfish because I will miss reading your reflections on the general aviation experience. I know that you are thoughtful in your approach to most things and am confident that this is no exception. Wishing you smooth air and blue skies for the flying that remains this year and, as always, if you’re in the neighborhood and care to drop in, it would be wonderful to see you.

I can imagine your feelings, I was in same situation a year ago, sold my beloved DA40 last June, but kept it till August to do the last trips, to Austria and Germany.
Same reason, due to certain circumstances I was only able to <40h p/a .
Ending my 40Y of flying Gliders and SEP , but safety first!

I’m a bit late to the party on this post, but wanted to chime in and say how sad it will be to see you stop flying. I hope the change won’t be permanent! I’ve always been an ardent admirer of your airborne adventures, and echo Chris’s comment about your thoughtful approach to general aviation. It’s been refreshing to read your posts when most of what we’re bombarded with on a daily basis is #StupidPilotTricks on Instagram.
